2010-2011 MBA Essay Questions
Q1. Strengths (500 words)
What are the 2 or 3 strengths or characteristics that have driven your career success thus far? What are the other strengths that you would like to leverage in the future?
R) Focus on strengths which show that you are well equipped for the MBA program. For instance, are you a persuasive speaker- have you been the chosen one at your workplace to present new ideas, negotiate with vendors etc? Or maybe you have good people management skills, making you the preferred person to put together and lead new teams.Whatever the skills you write about, show how they successfully impacted your career. Keeping in mind that UNC's program is designed to cement 2-3 vital skills such as strategic thinking and general management skills, leadership and teamwork and presentation and influencing skills, which of these do you think you can develop further during your MBA at UNC and leverage in the future?
Q2. Goals (500 words)
Please describe your short and long term goals post-MBA. Explain how: your professional experience has shaped these goals; why this career option appeals to you; and how you arrived at the decision that now is the time and the MBA is the appropriate degree.
R) You need to show clarity regarding how the MBA will add value to you, short term and long term and especially in light of what you see as your immediate post MBA career goal. So if you wish to be a Product Manager in the Consumer Goods sector, what skills have you acquired towards this through your professional experience so far, and what further skills/knowledge do you intend to equip yourself with through the MBA? Also, what in your background has influenced your choice e.g. you have had exposure to sales and BD in the consumer goods industry, and think you can build on this foundation and upgrade your skills to enter the Marketing function. Why is the MBA required at this stage - is the skills gap prompting your decision or has your employer suggested that you acquire a general management perspective? Finally, what key elements of an MBA such as peer group study and work, case method, emphasis on leadership/entrepreneurship, make the MBA better suited than any other course of study?

What personal qualities or life experiences distinguish you from other applicants? How do these qualities or experiences equip you to contribute to UNC Kenan-Flagler?

What have you learnt from such experiences which you think will serve you as you pursue the UNC MBA program? Another approach you can follow is to use this essay to bring out what some of your personal qualities/ values are too - and maybe link them to how they are allied with UNC's core values.
